Discuss Cat Behaviour / Cat Tail Meanings For Behaviour and Cat mood
« on: March 08, 2014, 09:10:10 AM »
Read a nice article about Cat tails here this morning.

Quote
Contented   Tail curves down and then up a the tip.
This is a peaceful contented cat.

Curious & interested   Tail slightly raised and gently curved

Interested & friendly   Tail held vertical but with tip tilting over.
The cat is in a greeting mood but is slightly cautious

Happy   Tail held vertical, tip stiffly held upright.
The cat is ready and willing to greet, with no reservations.

After greeting you   Tail held vertically and quivering.
This is a friendly hello! It is the same action when the cat sprays, he may omit a scent when he does this but this in inconclusive.

Unhappy   Tail lowered, maybe even between legs.
This is a signal of submission, feeling lowly and defeated

Fearful   Tail held low and puffed out
Defensive   Tail arched and bristling.
This is also a cat ready to defend itself if pushed. A cat will always puff itself up when challenged to try and make itself appear bigger and scare the challenger.

Aggressive   Tail held straight and bristling.
This is the sign of aggression

Conflict   Tail swishing violently side to side.
The sign of conflict in its most angry state, usually a sign that the cat is about to attack.

Irritation   Tail still with tip twitching.
A state of mild irritation. But if the tip becomes more vigorous this mean the cat is becoming more bad tempered.

Sexual   Tail held to one side.
Usually performed by the female. This is an invitation to the male when she is ready to be mounted.

Would your understandings tally with these?

This is great Em!

I love the whole idea of a secret world, and it's most certainly that! I can't get George to wear a collar either, he just...removes it, so I've given up!

Cat Blogs / Breakfast With George The Lazy Black Cat A Battle of Wits

George Versus Rob

Most cats are lazy, nothing new there but my cat George - he's incredibly lazy and like most cats manipulative too. Or maybe he's just supremely clever and I'm as daft as a brush! You decide.

6am: Meow meow meow scratch scrape - "Go away George it's 6am there's no way I'm feeding you and you're not coming in here with those muddy paws"

Yes, I talk to the cat like he understands my English.

The next 10 minutes usually continue with a mix of him scratching and meowing culminating in me talking in my sternest voice! This usually does this trick and he gets the message. However, the damage is done and I'm awake so after a little fiddle on my phone I usually get up at around 7am and go downstairs to be met by Mr swishy tail, looking at me and then looking at his bowl, looking at his bowl then looking at me oscillating back and forth a time or two,  sometimes sniffing at it or licking it to accentuate the point.

"Feed me puny human!!"

It's funny, cos sometimes I say to myself (and to the cat) no, you woke me up (again) so you can wait a while. Which is pathetic of me really as it takes but seconds to load his bowl and he of course doesn't understand that waking me up isn't a great idea; after all to him, it means food, albeit eventually.

Yet, for that 10 minutes or so whilst I drink my coffee and eat my toast I feel a slight sense of victory! The fact that I know he's just itching to scoff his food down in milliseconds as he swishes around by ankles feigning affection for me makes it all the little better that I was made to get up earlier than I wanted to. Yet cave I do and I watch as he shovels his Felix down his neck like some never before fed rotund furry mound of hungriness.

He'll then lose all interest in my existence - with a swish of his tail (almost in disdain) he'll glide through the cat flap and sit outside the backdoor, self satisfied and smug at his ability to bend the puny human to his will.

Hey Em!

Great intro - thanks for sharing!

As you know already I've had the privilege to meet Ziggy so can vouch for his awesomeness!

As for your question regarding cat love universality; for me, I like all cats so long as they don't bite me hard or scratch me!  :o

You may recall Rhubarb - what a character he was, and probably my fave 'friends' cat ever!

Hi!

Thanks for sharing!

I've always had cats in my life, my current cat is named George and he's 7.

He cracks me up in that he's a total user and gets me to do exactly what he requires, namely feed him when he wants food and not much else :D

He's probably the most laziest cat I've ever known, oscillating between food bowl and couch!

He's black but has the odd grey hair too, probably as a result of living with me. I originally got him for my daughter when she was 12 but... she soon became bored with her kitten and I took over all responsibility.

He is a character and I find myself saying "Morning Cat" when I get up, to which he meows in return usually followed by a walk over to his food bowl with a swish of the tail. He's also fairly timid but seems to warm to other people, usually females. Perhaps it's just me. That said, he is also very placid and hasn't ever once bit or scratched me which for me and cats is a definite first. :)

Notice any patterns here!? ;0)
